Quetta: Overcrowding, pollution and mismanagement have turned "Little Paris" into a dump

 Courtesy: The Nation

Quetta, the capital city of Balochistan, was established as a military garrison by British raj. It was planned to accommodate 100,000 people. Today, almost 140 years after its establishment, Quetta is home to approximately 3 million people. Accommodating 30 times more people than its capacity has taken its toll on the city and a lot of municipal problems have surfaced. Compounding those problems is the gross mismanagement of successive provincial governments and incompetent bureaucrats.

Balochistan Government Should Serve The Public Not Land Mafia

Transporters in Quetta city are on strike since 20th April. For more than two weeks, passengers that want to travel to Quetta from interior Balochistan are facing a great deal of misery. Reason for this strike is that Balochistan government is hell bent on shifting all bus stands to Hazar Gunji, a suburb located 32 KM out of Quetta city. The indifference of Balochistan government to the suffering of common people has even forced people to ask whether Dr. Malik is there enemy number one?

In the Name of Educational Emergency

Courtesy: The Nation

According to reports of Educational awareness groups, 2.3 million children are out of school in Balochistan. Literacy rate of the province is a mere 39 percent. In order to increase literacy rate in the province, current government led by Dr. Malik Baloch imposed an educational emergency. Educational budget was increased to 26% of the total budget which is higher than all other provinces. On the face of it all the steps of Balochistan government seem commendable, but a thorough analysis proves that most steps are futile and meant for face saving only.

Avoid Shifting Of Quetta Bus Stands To Hazar Ganji

Quetta is the capital of Balochistan and the only metropolitan city of the province. People from all corners of Balochistan visit Quetta for official business, treatment in hospitals and shopping. Bus services from all the districts of Balochistan transport passengers to Quetta on daily basis. Buses from Baloch belt are parked at a make-shift bus stand in Musa colony on Sariab Road. Pashtun belt buses are parked at a similar make-shift arrangement on Spiny road. In 1990s, idea of a bus stand out of Quetta city in Hazar Ganji areas was floated. A bus stand was constructed but it failed due to lack of proper connecting transport facilities with Quetta city. Now, again efforts are being made to shift the bus stands of Quetta to Hazar Ganji.

All is Well in Balochistan

All is well in Balochistan if we believe the regular statements issued by Chief Minister of Balochistan, Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch. The situation on the ground, however, is totally opposite. Yesterday three terrorism incidents took place in Quetta city. In first incident 8 innocent and poor vegetable vendors belonging from Hazara community were gunned down due to their faith. Second incident targeted a convoy of security forces and the third one was a direct but unsuccessful assassination attempt on Molana Fazal ur Rehman, one of the most influential national leaders of Pakistan. This proves that all is not well in Balochistan.

Balochistan Budget: A Set of Empty Promises

Courtesy: The Balochistan Point

The budget presented by Balochistan government is nothing but a set of empty promises. Ruling coalition of Balochistan consisting of National Party (NP), Pashtunkhaw Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) has badly failed in every sphere of governance. The current budget is just a traditional budget that makes high claims but at the end of the year there will be no change in the lives of people of Balochistan.
