Senate Election Reforms



Political landscape of Pakistan has been engulfed by Senate elections for the last two weeks. Amid controversies and cries of horse trading, Senate elections took place on March 5. Though the consensus achieved by political parties is a healthy sign for democracy, further improvements are required, especially in the method of Senate elections.

Balochistan Ignored For Post Of Chairman Senate

Amid much controversy, Senate elections took place in Pakistan. Raza Rabbani from Pakistan People’s Party was elected Chairman Senate for a term of three years. Abdul Ghafoor Haideri of JUI-F was elected Deputy Chairman Senate. Pakistani media praised the unopposed election of Raza Rabbani but Balochistan was once again ignored for the top slot in Senate.

Next Chairman Senate Should Be From Balochistan



Senate elections took place on 5th March and that resulted in increasing the political temperature of the country. Senate elections witnessed some controversies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assembly, method of voting for FATA senators was changed at eleventh hour and in Balochistan some unexpected candidates won amid allegations of horse trading. At the moment, a tug of war is taking place between PPP and PML-N for the slot of Chairman of Senate. In the best interest of federation of Pakistan, Next chairman of Senate should be form Balochistan.

The Senate is the upper house of Pakistani Parliament and it has been designed to give equal representation to all federating units. Elections for half of the Senate seats take place after every three years. Eventful Senate elections of 2015 raised the issue of horse-trading and the Pakistani media was taken over by it. However, some important issues relating to Senate elections in Balochistan were ignored by the mainstream media of Pakistan.
