Drought in Balochistan

Balochistan is all set to face a harsh drought in the coming months. Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has stated that 29 out of 32 districts of Balochistan are affected by drought. Primary reason for drought in Balochistan is that fewer rainfalls took place last year. The drought in Balochistan has the potential to cause a human catastrophe and inaction of the Balochistan government is compounding the problem.

Senate Election Reforms



Political landscape of Pakistan has been engulfed by Senate elections for the last two weeks. Amid controversies and cries of horse trading, Senate elections took place on March 5. Though the consensus achieved by political parties is a healthy sign for democracy, further improvements are required, especially in the method of Senate elections.

Empowerment of women is a barometer for development of any society. Over the course of the last few decades, some progress has been made in creating political space for women in Balochistan. However, the composition of cabinet and elections for local bodies indicate a shrinking space for women in the politics of Balochistan.

The Pakhtun-Baloch relationship



Last Sunday, an article published in The News on Sunday, titled Pakhtuns in Balochistan, was a rant about lack of autonomy of Pakhtuns of Balochistan. The author of that article has given an impression, between the lines, that Baloch are responsible for the current plight of the Pakthuns of Balochistan. Historical facts have been twisted by the author to prove his point, which need to be corrected.
